Emergencies

During our term in office we have experienced several emergencies. From our water
outages, due to the age of our water system, to hurricanes, power failures and more.
Early on after taking office - we realized that we had no written policies in place. I met
with our mangers and provided them with the training and authority to act during
emergencies. Working together we created policies and procedures and I'm glad we
did. Shortly after creating the policies we were required to pull our binders. During
the hurricane our managers and staff did a wonderful job in providing the services
needed.

During and after the hurricane we took the action needed to help secure our city.
While unpopular with some - I declared a state of emergency and called in help from
the National Guard. I felt that it was important to keep our citizens save under all
conditions. During that time, as you did, I fought the heat and the days and nights
without power. It was not until the third night that I was able to secure a home
generator which also helped to power our city/home communication system. Each day
and night I stayed in constant communications with our departments and with our
parish and state agencies. I did our best to pass information on to you using KVPI as
often as possible. I also drove the neighborhoods to talk to the residence that might
not have had phones or power. After the hurricane we implemented a city wide
communication system that will enable the city to notify you of any impending dangers
or any general alerts that occur. I have also attended numerous meeting around the
state so that we may continue to improve our response.

During times of emergencies - thanks to you - I have the experience and trust to make
the decisions that are required. I know the water, gas and sewer systems and can
make those quick decisions. I also have a good working relationship with our police,
fire dept., parish and state officials as well as the National Guard and power
companies.

You have a Mayor that hits the ground running. During times of emergencies I am
here for you. I did not rest until I knew every home had all services restored. Know
that with my calmness and experience I am always working for you.
