Elisha ran a blacksmith shop and general store in Bayou Chicot and there is some evidence he also ran a grist mill for there are entries in his books of customers buying corn meal for $1.00 a bushel. • He worked as a blacksmith. Crafted the original Bowie knife. The Bowie knife is said to have been designed by Rezin Pleasants Bowie, the brother of James "Jim" Bowie who was to make the knife legendary, and, according to an inscription at the Alamo, was made by "a Louisiana blacksmith". In her book, "Looking Back, A Narrative History of Bayou Chicot", Mabel A. Thompson of Ville Platte, Louisiana says that Elisha was that blacksmith. Jim and Rezin Bowie did, in fact, live at a plantation close to Elisha, near Lamourie, in Rapides Parish, and his normal course of travel would have brought him by Elisha's shop. It is said that Bowie whittled the shape of the knife he wanted out of wood and gave it to Elisha to make for him. Mrs. Thompson writes that she talked with Elisha's granddaughter, Mrs. Lois Whittington DeVille, who said, when a young girl, she saw a book of Elisha's that had the drawings for this knife. (Thompson only lists Harbert as a child of Elisha Whittington and Malina Dalton.) Other evidence does not bear out this family legend, however: • Church Record: Bef 1846. He entered service in South Carolina as did his cousins, Cornelius and Richard Whittington, and Jared (Jarratt) Whittington. His service began in about 1778 or 1779 and continued through the Battle of Eutaw Springs in September 1781. From the September 10, 1827 statement of Grief Whittington on behalf of his cousin Jared Whittington receiving a pension he described his and Jared's service: "We all lived in the state of South Carolina at the commencement of the Revolutionary War, and lived there until about eighteen years ago, when we moved to this country and settled within six miles of Liberty, in the County of Amite and State of Mississippi, where we have resided ever since and where we now reside. I entered the service of South Carolina Militia as a private when the revolution first broke out in the course of about two or three years afterward. Jared Whittington joined the service, at first we were were relieved every two months, but after a while were keeped out almost constant. In a battle fought at Rouses Ferry at little Peedee against some British and Torys, Jared Whittington, the present applicant, while fighting against the common enemy, was shot in his right heel about the first fire, with a ball. It disabled him & he was taken from his horse. And after we whipped the British & Torys, he was carried (by cousin Richard Whittington) to his father's in Cheraw District, where he was confined a long time with his wounds and was not able to march or ride his horse well, during the war and did not serve anymore. His term of service was out long before he was able to go about. I know that he has ever since & is now greatly disabled by said wound from walking well or working. His life has been very orderly at all times. He has always been a poor man and not able by his labour to support himself. The principal work that he does is at the coopers trade (one who makes or repairs wooden casks or tubs). I do not know at what time the battle was fought in which the wound was received, but it was not long after General Gates & DeKalb were defeated at Camden on Watuce in 1780, for after this battle the Tory's were very saucy and we were obliged to be going from one swamp to another pretty constantly. And whenever we could hear of a party, we just dashed upon them. From the weather being warm & corn first beginning to get hard in the field, I think the battle must have been fought in September or early October. Jared Whittington & myself, at the time Jared was shot, belonged as privates to Captain Hinsons Company in Col. Lemuel Bentons Regiment. We all had horses who were together at the time of this battle. Col. 6 Produced by Legacy on 19 Apr 2006 Ancestors of Josephine (Aka Josie) Courtney Murphey, who was Second in command, commanded on the day of the battle on little Peedee, where Jared was shot." "As Stated in my Declaration I was acquainted with Cols. Pinckney and Thompson of the 1st & 3rd Regts. While in the Continental Service & when a volunteer also with Cols. Lee & Washington of U. S. Dragoons. I was present at the Battle of Eutaw Springs (September 8, 1781) under Genls. *Marion & Greene." • He received a pension for rev war in 1833. • Settled In: 1803, Amite Co MS. from pension testimony • He appeared on the census in 1810.
